A friend and fellow blogger recently had to purchase auto insurance. Previously, he had been a listed driver on his parent's auto policy. He asked me to explain my understanding of the term "minimum limits". I explained to my friend that in Kentucky the minimum limits are the following
$25,000 per person for Bodily Injury and $50,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage liability. If he is involved in an auto accident and is at fault the insurance company may have to pay up to the following:
If there were severe injuries in the other car and for example both occupants were seriously injured, then the insurance company may face the exposure of paying up to $25,000 per person in the other vehicle with a maximum of $50,000(for injuries only) for this one accident. The driver of the other car who was not at fault may able to collect up to $10,000 for property damage depending on the severity of damage and cost of repair. My friend was glad to know that when he purchased his auto policy he would receive a premium based on a credit for proof of prior insurance for the past 6 months. Since he was a listed driver on his parents policy and the policy had been in forcer for 6 mos, he was able to secure a lower premium. Many companies may increase the premium if you have not had auto coverage for the past 6 months. The Watts Team is always available to answer insurance related questions.
